Are you addicted to Xbox Live?

Over on the Uk’s Daily Mail according to Proffesor Mark Griffths director of the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University, online computer gamers are displaying the same signs of addiction as gamblers and drug users.

I wouldn’t say I’m addicted to Xbox Live, but I do have second thoughts about playing anything without being logged on to live. Does this mean I’m addicted? I think not. Addicted is way to strong of a word. In love with Xbox live would be a better term. Are you in love with Xbox live enough to call yourself addicted?

I really want to play MMO’s, but I think I’d get addicted. And I already spend enough time on Xbl and other games as it is…

I have two sons, 12 and 14. I think they are both addicted to xbox live. I have even written to Bill Gates requesting information regarding this increasingly addictive system. there are no parental controls allowing parents to stop the children from playing. There is no way to limit the time frame that the system could be kept on. I have caught my 14 year old playing in the middle of the night. I strongly feel that something should be done about this. I would love to take a sledge hammer to the system. There should be a warning labal for parents telling them that it is a highly addictive thing. I plan on taking the system away for good. About $1,000, between the games and accessories down the drain
They have all of the symptoms that an alcoholic or drug addict would exhibit. If you are thinking of buying this sytem for your children, I have one word of advice for you: DON’T.

My 15 yr old son is addicted. Dont underestimate the seriousness of this. He shows all the signs and symptoms of someone addicted to drugs/alcohol. I just took it away for good yesturday. He is threatening to run away, or go steal another console. I'm with you Grace. There needs to be parental controls and a warning label on the system.

grace, i am addicted to xbox live and there are actually A LOT OF Parental Controls on the xbox. You can put a time limit on how long they play. Like you said the symptoms are the same as an alcoholic or a drug addict. If you take away the xbox there is a form of withdrawal. The withdrawal does not cause physical needs by the brain will feel that it needs to play and extreme sadness and emotional damage could come from this.

Oh Grace, don’t take it away from them. It’s a great system. That’s why they want to play so much. It’s easier said then done, but you just need to put your foot down and let them know where there boundries are. Video games in general are not a waste of time like most of society will have you believe. I’m sure you have a few things that you are very fond of and would be seriously pissed if it were to be taken away from you entirely. Then again, if they don’t do anything else but play the 360, then they may have a larger problem. In that case removal of the 360 may be in order.

I don’t know the extinct of your dilemna, but if it’s not a gigantic issue that majorly affects them in other facets of there life then don’t blow it out of proportion or they’ll just want to defy you more just because you said they can’t this or that. This applies to everything, not just gaming. I’m sure you defied your parents to, when they said you couldn’t do someting that they didn’t understand.

Xbox is a ridculous waste of life. Perhaps Microsoft might think of some games that didn’t promote killing and blood and focused on games enjoyed by all instead of sucking the life out of family.

Way to go Mr. Gates! At first, I thought the xbox was pretty cool, until I noticed that my nephew will not come off of it, not even for one second. As his uncle, I try to do things for him like go to a movie, hang out at the mall, etc. But he ignores me like I’m not even standing there. You tell him to stop playing and he will get defiant and sometimes violent. This thing is like heroin. He is addicted big time! He will keep playing till 5am! Sometimes on a school night. He lives with me and my parents (his grandparents). He’s failing in school. He’s 14 and still stuck in the 6th if that tells you anything. As his guardians, we could possibly take the blame for his failure in school. If you want to make a career out of xbox live, then more power to you. But I’m very sorry to inform you that a job will not hire you if all you have is xbox gaming skills on your resume. If you think otherwise, then you are retarded! I used to be a game and online addict for years when I was in my 20’s, but I always knew my stopping points. When I was 14, I didn’t have all those things…no computers, xbox, playstations, whatever. I was learning guitar and my goal was to get into a band. That was more exciting to me in every sense of those words. They had a stopping point there as well. My parents said, have a good education, a good career, and you will have a good life..and so far, that dam has never cracked or leaked. I told my nephew, I will pull the plug on this xbox at 11pm whether he likes it or not. I have control over the internet router and he doesn’t. And the worst this situation gets, I will block his access from the router to shut him out completely from xbox live. You can count on it. Get a job and pay for your own freaking internet service! Oh wait a second! You don’t have a job…so that’s out of the question! Word up!

I am much like Rob, I am so addicted to xbox ever since I played my first game, I have now moved onto XBL and just like rob, when im at work I login to my live account @ xbox.com.

I have taken my addiction to another level by building my own website "addictedtoxbox.com", creating a facebook account called addictedtoxbox.com.

There is nothing like a get together with your mates playing Call of Duty 4 or 5, Gears Of War, GTA and having a good laugh.
