Dark Light
Xbox Live Arcades Double Edged Sword

With the ushering in of the new year in short order, great times for gamers on the Xbox 360 are bound to be in abundance. Live Arcade is no exception to this until nostalgia gets the best of us. After many retro offerings this past year, I for one let my nostalgia get in the way of determining whether or not I was going to buy an arcade title before I had even played the trial. After playing a few trials, I was so wrapped up in feeling that joy I once had as a kid again I bought the game anyway.

Never again I say. That’s my Live Arcade resolution for 2007. Never again will I let myself get wrapped up in the nostalgia of yester year. As great as Live Arcade is, I think I’ll stick with the new Indie developed games. That is until I break my resolution and fall back into my old ways pretending I’m a kid again in the 80’s and early 90’s when arcades that you actually had to leave the house to go to were all over. Maybe it’s the simplicity of it, or maybe it’s the feeling in me who wants to be a kid again. Who knows.

Have you let Nostolgia get the best of you?

I suppose I’ve always been a total whore for what’s new and exciting in gaming because arcades only stood to provide me with a place where I could see what was next for gaming. I remember when you couldn’t get arcade graphics on a console. Daytona USA in the arcade was leaps better than the Saturn version. So when I see the XBLA, I don’t see a retro haven of nostalgia; I see what’s new and wonderful on the horizon of consoles. And I buy games accordingly. I’ve purchased 18 “new” XBLA games and only 1 retro game (the retro one was free). I just hope MS continues in a direction that supports indie games. We can still have retro titles, but I say they should release one of each every Wednesday.

I picked up New Rally-X this week. I have fond memories of that game. It is good for a quick pick up and play session. Maybe it is time to bring out the next-gen retro like Sega Rally or Castlevania: SOTN. Lets see whart 2007 has to offer.

I’ve only gotten indy stuff for the most part, might have one retro game on the xbox but I doubt it.
