If you had the pleasure of owning a Dreamcast, then you would have had one of these memory units called the VMU. Originally designed to be a conventional memory card, it also had a screen and D-pad on it. The screen was used for viewing the contents of the units like the saved games on it agnostic to the console itself, but to actually have a played game experience. Of course sounding like a great idea Sega never really used this to it’s fullest. Games like Sonic Adventure let you off load your Choas to the VMU where you could in return further level up your character without the use of the console what so ever.
Several years later here we are with Zune and it’s current association with the Xbox 360 as just a storage device for media, but what if it acted like the VMU described above. With a much more capable device could this be what Microsoft has in store for the portable device in the future? The Live Anywhere strategy has shades of this, but what if the Zune took this to the next level and actually had a tangible gaming experience that wasn’t limited to that one device. If the gaming experience was bridged by the Zune and 360, users wouldn’t have to decide what to do next when they find themself’s away from there home theater setup and there 360.
Those who don’t have an interest in buying a Zune at the moment, I’m sure would give this a look if it somehow could keep them always connected to the games they play even if there away. The current edition has Wifi already, so what’s keeping a gaming focused Zune from using that to tunnel back to your Xbox. Scheduling “GIGANTIC” downloads before I get home would be nice. Even after the amazement the Iphone has churned up about it, who cares if it doesn’t give me the things I want.

I thought it was a nice idea. I guess nobody else does. Oh well. It’ll be funny when version 2 of the Zune does what I’m talking about.
