Xbox 360 vs. Girlfriend What would you choose?

In what has turned out to be a monster thread over on the Gamespot Forums, a 360 gamer has gotten the evil words “360 or me” spoken to him. Whether or not the gamer in question here has a significant problem playing to much is of course in question, but what if he’s just the average gamer with a girlfriend who just hates games?

Yes, he did buy his girlfriend Viva Pinata for there anniversary (bad move). He does admit to thinking about fudgehogs while making out with her, but does that mean he needs to get rid of his 360 just because she wants him to? Why make him make a choice like this in the first place. Obviously she doesn’t like who he is anyway. A 360 is in no way a replacement for a woman, but an Xbox doesn’t make you choose between it or a girlfriend. Maybe this guy should dump her for someone who happens to be a gamer also, so things like this don’t become a issue.

What would you do?

Just my experience. The worst relationship I was ever in was with a girlfriend who hated that I played video games. This is taking into account that I never played more then 3 hours a week. And it turned out bad because she was very controlling and very jealous of other things, even talking on the phone with a girl that I grew up with that was married. If your not playing more then say an hour a day, maybe 2 on the weekends and she is that pissy, dump her, it’s a sign of a high maintenance, controlling girl.

Well, it depends on the circumstances. If his habit of gaming is getting in the way of their relationship; such as causing him to become irresponsible then she might be suggesting that he rethink his priorities. For example, she gets stood up at a restaurant because he lost track of time playing 360.

But if it mildly distracts his attention away from her; I’d say it’s an unreasonable question to ask, “360 or me.” One issue to point out before deciding that she’s a control freak or not is judging the fine line between a hobby and an addiction.

The 360 is good to me. It’s has Xbox Live, tons of media function all in HD, and it comes with the Xbox community. No girl is going to give me that. The worst my 360 can do is flash red lights at me. I don’t hear any ultimatums coming from my 360. I’m not an idiot though, women give me a whole other kind fun. A kind of fun with mood swings and forced romantic gestures. Men aren’t romantic, so stop trying to make us.

Of course your girlfriend should not demand it be the xbox or her, but if you’re fucking dumb enough to buy a girl a video game for your anniversary you should consider yourself lucky not to have been dumped. Ah yes, and if you are placating her, here’s a thought. High maintenance women are usually bitterly vicious about sex as a weapon. You get serious, chances are you won’t be getting any on a regular basis. Such people are terribly selfish.

Yeah, I’d much rather have a XBox 360 and a Wii than a high maintenance woman. My life would be a lot more enjoyable single with a good game library than with a woman who has the intimacy capacity of an automaton and the capacity for altruism that a toddler has (me, me, me AND DID I MENTION ME?!) even with her own kids.

If you’re serious, then try to get her to play games with you (on the 360 :p). Go for fun party games like those on the Nintendo Wii, chicks should like those. Stay away from gory ones like Gears of Wars, keep those for when she’s not around (yeah I can understand that might be a little tough).

Really? I mean really? How is it possible for all of you to make a decision based on the few sentences of this story. Yes it’s possible that she is a controlling, high maintenance bitch. It’s also possible that he is an addicted gamer doing 8 - 10 hrs / day.
Chances are it’s somewhere b/w the two. For those of you who don’t know, relationships are give and take. Compromise. If you aren’t willing to do that, then you are in the wrong relationship.

Holy crap this shouldn’t even be an issue. This probaly isn’t a ‘what if’ situation. I don’t think that this guy has his stuff together. If his girlfriend hated video games, which I doubt she did before, she does now.

If you want to get your girl to game get her a game as a gift NOT related to a romantic encounter.

He has his head stuck in his ass, plain and simple. He most likely plays every day and ignores his GF at some point for a video game and she knows it.

Because of a jerk like this this girl will HATE video games. One less girl to date gamers.

A lot of people seem to have issues with obsessive gaming…And grammar. Grammar moreso, though farther from the topic.
In any case, I maintain that, if this guy is in fact obsessed with gaming, he should find a girl who shares that with him. I know a couple who PvP on World of Warcraft for hours at a time, and fairly regularly to boot, and also had friends who kept in touch with their significant others while studying overseas via XBox Live. It works because both people involved enjoy doing it. If somebody doesn’t enjoy the experience of long-term, highly engrossed gaming, then they shouldn’t be in a relationship with someone who does.
I know how it feels to be ignored by a guy for the sake of video games. When Princess of Time came out on the Wii, my boyfriend would spend hours waving his Wiimote around, totally oblivious to the fact that I was even in his apartment. I got a little jealous of Midna by the end of it, but I understood that he loved gaming, and that getting through a Zelda game was important to him.
Even if he did turn the place into a momument to empty Mountain Dew cans…
So if you really love this girl, tell her how it’s got to be. If she can’t handle it, move along.

My boyfriends is a hardcore gamer, he loves his 360. This isnt a problem for me, as I’ve tried to steal it on many an occasion! She’s just an insecure idiot, if you’re in a relationship, arent you supposed to show a slight interest in each others hobbies? No harm in shooting the hell out of him on Gear of War or such a game, infact might be healthy for your relationship ha! I agree with Stephanie, HIGH MAINTENANCE!!

The key to a happy marriage is two controls to the gaming system. If she’s not willing to join the ranks, he should be looking elsewhere. There are plenty of awesome women out there who see the worth of gaming. My husband and I bought ourselves matching Nintendo DSs for Christmas.

I think this is less about “me or the 360″ and more about him neglecting to compromise. I know of no rational person who would tell their SO “you can’t play games at ALL, anymore”. This guy obviously is embellishing the story in a manner that bolsters support for him. Something like this would only happen after he repeatedly neglected her for his effing video game. I won’t even begin to get into why a woman who treats you well is worth all the dumb xbox’s in the world. I don’t think it’s about high maintenance, either. This guy is on the verge of learning from the book of hard knocks and it’s probably what he needs.

Dump her. Opposites attract but you have something you’re passionate about in common. If gaming’s your thing then she needs to understand.
My husband and I are at war… he won’t let me by a 360, he wants a PS3 instead!! The thing is that I think I’m willing to sacrafice… if I get to choose the games -hes into sports games and I’d rather be blowing shit up. But my point is that we both understand that everything goes out the window once you get playing and by the sound of things, his gf doesn’t.
There’s someone out there for him, probably waiting for him to chat her up at a game launch…

By the way, I’d love to be brought a game for my anniversary

Video games take up a lot of free time and if you and your girlfriend disagree on such a major hobby of yours; it probably wasn’t meant to be until you find someone who doesn’t mind games, you get tired of games or you can hopefully come to a compromise.

I’ve never ran into it though; all of my girlfriends have enjoyed watching Television, which I don’t really like. I like movies on DVD, but nothing on broadcast TV really interests me (other than South Park) so we would compromise by giving each other their collective space to enjoy their hobby; mine being video games and theirs being television.

Another example is some ex-girlfriends of mine have loved coffee, like Cuppy’s Coffee. I can’t stand the taste of coffee, although the smell doesn’t bother me. So every morning I would go by a gas station and get an energy drink and they would go by a Cuppys Coffee and get their espresso drinks.

The point being; sometimes life is about compromise, and you can have both.

Hmmm, well, the 360 is a one-shot deal…spend the cash and it’s yours for life. The girl, on the other hand, requires a top-up more regularly (and expensively) than a Roadrunner with a Hemi. Save your $ and keep the 360…a year from now you can buy that Roadrunner with the money you save…

I cant even play Gears of War for an hour without a dirty look, and her trying to talk to me when im in the middle of a round.. and then getting pissed when i dont hear exactly what she said. My boyfriend plays video games all the time, but he also makes separate time for me. Video games are what he loves and I would never ask him to choose me or his x-box. That’s just selfish. I think it’s cute when he plays. If you make time for your significant other, then there’s no reason why they should make a big deal over you playing. I mean at least you know they’re not out doing things you wouldn’t like
