In a interview with the BBC News, Xbox UK Head Neil Thompson had this to say about the possibility of a Blu-ray victory over HD-DVD:
“Microsoft will continue to be a strong supporter of the new HD DVD format, but if the format does indeed lose to Blu-ray (Blu-ray has been outselling it lately), it would be “highly likely” that the company would offer a Blu-ray solution“
Given the decision to not include a built-in HD-DVD drive maybe the smartest decision Microsoft made when designing the Xbox 360. Now, with the flexibility of eventually offering both in the now distant future, it will be interesting to see how this scratch’s the back of those who have already sided with the current HD-DVD drive.

I guess they would be left with no choice then if Blu-Ray is victorious.

Microsoft has been saying this ever since the HD-DVD add-on was announced. One of the many advantages of an exterior player!

This is exactly why I refuse to touch either format with a 10 foot pole.

If I had to choose, I think Blu-Ray is better; however, I don’t care much for either right now. I’m holding out for HVD…

I most likely won’t buy either, but HD-DVD addons are 130$ USD at most Walmarts right now, which is tempting me due to cheapness factor.

Sams Club says that they are taking HD DVD off of their shelves starting in January of 2008 and replacing them with Blu-Ray. As much as I am disgruntled with Sony. I do think that Blu-Ray has a better name and is more marketable to the public and “NEW AND IMPROVED”. HD DVD doesn’t sound like it is that much better than what is actually out there now.

I would love for hd dvd to win because of the name… bluray just doesnt seem like a movie type of disk to me.
But now that I’ve read this, I’m waiting for someone to win this damn war.
its rediculous.

Blu ray has won. I guess it was very smart to not build in an HDDVD drive into the 360

Was it smart or just good business sense when you have a third strategy in the works as well?

I think the only reason Blu-ray won is because the PS3 is also marketed at a blu-ray player. This means that every time a PS3 is sold, thats another mark for Blu-ray.
