Shigeru Miyamoto is a legend among legendary game designers no doubt, but when you hear something like this quote in a EW interview you just might have to do a double take. He said he could make Halo, but he chooses not to make games of that type.
“I could make Halo. It’s not that I couldn’t design that game. It’s just that I choose not to. One thing about my game design is that I never try to look for what people want and then try to make that game design. I always try to create new experiences that are fun to play.”
I’d be the first to say who the hell am I, but I can’t recall Miyamoto having ever conceptualized any game that was in first person or had anything to do with shooting anything. Of course Nintendo might have what has affectionately been called a Halo killer locked away in a vault, if so I’m sure we’d all like to see it. Marginalizing what Bungie has done for the first person shooter on the console saying that you could do it to is a little bit shocking coming from Miyamoto. Then again, the most interesting thing about this quote is the reference to his games being fun, as if Halo has no fun to be had. Interesting.

I’m gonna go out on a thin line since this is an Xbox site with tons of Halo fanboys lurking (Who am I kidding tons? Its more than that.) and say Bungie didn’t do jack shit. Goldeneye was the peak, it was *the* FPS, it did the whole 3d thing, everyone loved it, it let you dual-wield even, just not necessarily what you wanted to DW always, and it pwned hard. Halo is pretty much a fancier Goldeneye without the many many different weapons and with vehicles.
Its true!

I respect your opinion Geo, but have you gone back and played Goldeneye since then? It doesn’t hold up not one bit. When someone thinks FPS on a console the only thing you think about is Halo by default. Goldeneye was great at the time, but Halo does it better with the inclusion of dual analog.

See, I’ve gone back and played it. Once I find how to hack an N64 controller to use a joystick instead of C-Buttons, Goldeneye will rock harder than ever
The C-Buttons are annoying, but graphics don’t phase me. If they remade Goldeneye with no changes minus using a joystick instead of C-Buttons, it would own hardcore.
More people may think Halo by default, but most people don’t know what a 2600 is, or how to blow in a NES cartridge to make it work.

I remember the 2600 and blowing on NES catridges really well, but Miyamoto saying he could do Halo is crazy, because if he could he would have already. Motion sickness aside, he’s done just about everything else, why not do a shooter to broaden that already mammoth portfolio? I think thats about enough Nintendo talk. How about Miyamoto making a Halo type game?
Here’s a good dream: Microsoft acquires (buys) Nintendo. Miyamoto designs a Halo esque game for the next Xbox. I know I’m dreaming, but that would be cool. I call shotgun on Mario first, literally. /end of dream

well if you want goldeneye with a controller you could always download goldeneye source and use a controller or even d/l an emulator with goldeneye and try a controller with that.
