Talking to Eurogamer about additional content, Valve’s Team Fortress 2 designer Robin Walker had some interesting words to say about the matter.
“You buy the product, you get the content. We make more money because more people buy it, not because we try and nickel-and-dime the same customers.”
Valve’s marketing director Doug Lombardi had this to say.
“Our philosophy there is, if you buy the product, we put more content out to keep the game interesting, we sell more products.”
Valve Co-founder Gabe Newell added this to the discussion.
“Counter-Strike is number one and has been since ‘99 because we kept the game interesting, not because we tried to charge people more, and that’s come back in sales of Counter-Strike.”
Of course with Valve being new to the additional down-loadable content on the Xbox Live Marketplace, it’s a noble thing for Valve to go into this with the intent of a long time PC only model of giving everything away, but the Marketplace’s short history say’s otherwise. Longtime PC developer Epic Games can atest to this first hand. When the Orange box hit’s later this year, we’ll see if Valve has a change of heart or more likely are forced to charge by the publisher third party or not.
