Mass Effect… Disappointing

Mass Effect 2007 Screenshots

While I try to leave unkind spouting of mean words to politicians and comedians, I felt compelled (by Thrills) to voice my opinion. Destructiods Orcist believes that the Mass Effect demo at PAX was disappointing stating that the conversatations are similar to that of a “ventriloquist’s dummy.” To be fair, DToid wasn’t the only ones to have such rave reviews, Filefront also has been talking about the evils of a boring conversation system. I already wrote up an ugly post dedicated to Orcist but I am to lazy to proofread for typo’s at 7am in the morning, If you so desire read my unedited genius (or lack there of) after the break.

Hmm…. from the mouth of an over zealous fanboy I have one question for Destructiod’s Orcist. Did you see Mass Effect? I am not talking about your interpretation of a generic conversation between a crazy scientist, a relaxed scientist and a space marine (if you don’t know what I am talking about get about 3/4 through the video demo that came out Saturday night on gamespot). I’m talking about what could have happened, what happened, and how that effected the future of the Mass Effect universe. I understand that sometimes people look at a game and say, “The animation is bogus therefore the game is bogus.” But this is a game with how many thousand lines of dialog. I’m not making excuses for it but I noticed that the facial expressions where great. How you can be disappointed out of what I saw I don’t know.

Games are experiences and the point of an RPG is to put you through that experience with the most realism as possible to the point that you feel like at character. Now this is where I make an excuse for Mass Effect. Have you played any freaking Japanese RPG that uses sprites to represent characters and their emotions? Emotions aren’t represented in your movement they are represented in your facial expressions. Now I’m not saying Mass Effect is full of robots that stand around like wooden planks from Ed, Edd, and Eddy and smile when they get a command in a line of code. Look at the game again and see the posture of the crazy scientist I mentioned above.

I feel by reading your article you were looking for something different, you were looking for a movie. An experience that is not directly interactive and completely linear. Mass Effect isn’t created like that. Orcist you said this concerning your feeling of gameplay in Mass Effect and this shows me your missing the point, “The gameplay looks like your standard FPS fare, which is to say that I didn’t see anything great or remarkable.” (Oh Noes Dreaded CAPS) ITS NOT A FPS, this is an interactive Action RPG, and when you saw that it was an RPG you were pissed off. The first level was made to introduce you to the game and set the stage. Yes there were very few choices in the first level but that is because there are few things you can do not knowing really whats going on. The first episode of Lost is an example of not having a lot of choices; Plane crashes, people spaz, people run from fire.

I am not a Super Defense Force advocate for this game but I see the promise it has. Hearing you just drop the bash hammer all up on it is sorta annoying. Give it another try when you have the controller in your hand and can play a few hours of it. Until then shut your editorial pie hole and play some Bioshock.

Kindly,

Matthew :)
