The passion some have for the gaming industry is at most times fantastic to see, up until many cross the line and blankly call game dev’s lazy and what they’ve often worked on for years nothing but a .5 release. Have gamers all become elitists or is it just a simple case of being tightwads at all cost just because it’s easy to do? The nature of wish (some)gamers accuse game devs of copying and pasting games is alarming to say the least, yet the press are guilty of it also.
So, lets say a game is released in a series and it resembles much of which came before it in that series of games. Of course it’s going to be very similar. It’s in a series of games that already have an established following of which chances are, they already know works. Why mess with something that works? We all often say we want change, yet when that time comes and it actually happens nothing comes of it, but constant bitching about how it’s not the same anymore.
Again, lets say a game is “the same” as the previous game before it. Lets forget about all of the new and “not the same” environments, more or less new items/weapons etc., new characters, new animations, new story where it applies, and lets definitely forget about all of the possible new features. All of that has got to equate to the same as before, right? If game devs can copy and paste these games, then why aren’t they being released every month? Sure, it’s easy to make a videogame. The term “Childs play” comes to mind, right? The years of development are used to just lollygag around the office anyway. All of that time must be spent doing something. Why not use it to laugh at all of you consumers buying all of these copy and paste jobs.
Now, of course none of what’s in that past paragraph is in anyway accurate in the least, yet this is what some think when it comes to game development. Besides sports games where dev’s most definitely have their arms tied behind their backs with a sport that never changes, regardless, the very notion of a .5 in the videogame world is just ridiculous no matter how you look at it unless your name is Dynasty Warriors.
Put yourself in the shoes of a development house. They put years of their lives and copious amounts of time away from their families to make these games that may or may not turn out well, yet we are so quick to dismiss all of their work as nothing but a .5 job. I see the problem there, don’t you?
