Our friend MDK over at 360Junkies had the privileges to get his greedy little hands on the Mythic Map Pack. With this power he decided to do us a favor and let us know how the Mythic Maps handle from gameplay to style.

Come read what I have to say about the Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack which includes Assembly, Orbital, and Sandbox.

Assembly

Description from Halo 3 Map Selection – The Covenant war machine continues its march to conquest; even with its head severed it is still dangerous. 2-8 players

When I first played Assembly it was at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, WA at the end of August. This arena style map which is circular in shape and has a dominant color of purple and multi-level design plays well into the background of Halo’s mythology. Assembly gets its name because it is set within the Covenants manufacturing plant where the birth of the Scarabs are formed in this skyward assembly line putting the pieces together above your head as you fight. The maps layout has 4 walkways that interconnect to a center room where you can find the invisibility. Under the center room where you find the invisibility you will find the gravity hammer which is a good weapon to have in the small spaces, where you can easily get some kills. The map has two bases on each side which features ramps in the back to lead you out the back and two doors on each side, with one sided glass windows in the center so you can look out into the arena and the enemy cannot see into your base. This map will mostly be used for slayer variants and some objective bases games like infection, juggernaut, king of the hill, or oddball works well also. I personally do have a lot of fun on this map and hopefully when everyone can play it they will agree.

Orbital

Description from Halo 3 Map Selection – With a lot of situational awareness, and a little luck, hopefully they only thing you will lose is your luggage. 4-12 players

Orbital which is set in a space station orbiting above earth that is in a U shaped design and easy to navigate after a few games should be a fan favorite with the massive amount of detail put into the map. With long hallways and corridors you will have good ranged fighting and close combat encounters when moving around the bends of the map. On the map you will find battle rifles, a sniper rifle, and the rockets for the control weapons. The rockets are located on the top of the map in the center overlooking an elevator shaft that players can jump over to reach the lower level faster. The sniper can be found under the bridge walkway close to the rockets for your long distance shooting in the hallways. The bases on the maps have a secret which is a small hallway that can take you above the base where the players spawn or be used as a hiding area when you want to hold up when playing capture the flag. When playing the map you will also find some vehicles for fast runs down the hallways, you will find mongooses and a ghost which will be hard to navigate but better used as a fast way to get some splatter kills. This map is best to be used as a 4v4 slayer map or one-sided objective games like one flag or one bomb. I did have a chance to play oddball and it seemed interesting, I would like to play some king of the hill and see how well the teams work together to get around the map.

Sandbox

Description from Halo 3 Map Selection – This endless wasteland still holds many secrets, some of them are held more deeply than others. 4-12 players

This is the map that forge built, and all its fans have been waiting for. With the default layout which is symmetrical and reminds me of an Egyptian theme holds two bases with ramps on either side of the back of the base, with the front of the base holding a small alcove for a regenerator. Above each base will be a floating color ball to indicate which base you are at or need to be going to either red or blue. In the center of the map holds two important pieces, climbing above the center structure will be the overshield, underneath that will be the gravity lift. When playing multi flag on this map the best advice I can give you is to go directly through the center of the map and hopefully grab the gravity lift, so you can deploy it in the front of your base ride the lift up and instantly capture the flag. This map is also good for slayer being big enough to hold a few warthogs and brute choppers. Rockets and power drainers on the map can help with holding the vehicle overpowers down to a minimum. Now Sandbox is unique in the way that it has 3 distinctly different layers to the map itself. You first have the main playfield where you can rearrange all the pieces or start from scratch and make your own map in the sand. The second playfield is called the Skybox which you require to take a teleporter up and into the air where you will see a blank field and a blue grid. This space was created for all the maps that you would want to have falling kill zones examples would be guardian, lockout. I haven’t tested it myself but I have been told that from the Skybox you can still interact and shoot weapons and kill players that are on the sand. The final area of the map is called The Crypt which is located in the bottom of the map; you will have to delete the area guarding it in the center of the map floor in forge to access the long drop to the crypt. When you enter the Crypt you will see the familiar blue grid for the forge enthusiasts so you can line up everything accordingly. With a high ceiling and large space to work with you can easily create the fan favorite game variant Griffball; by default the side walls include flood lights to illuminate the play area. I could easily go on and on about how well this map will be used for forge, I can’t wait to see what the fans will do with this map but believe me when I say just playing this map alone in forge will be worth the cost of getting all the maps.

The Halo 3 Mythic Map pack can be obtained through the Collector’s Edition of Halo Wars, or later this Spring on the Xbox Live Marketplace ( Price is TBD )
