The Xbox Domain’s Top Ten Games of the Year 2009 (3&4)

Game of the Year is something that can and only will be determined by you. No matter what this list says in the end you have your favorites and so does the staff of The Xbox Domain. Collating the picks by the staff and adding up occurrences of each title from every personal list to determine the order of the Top Ten Games of 2009 for the Xbox 360, we bring you our result. You may agree and more likely you will disagree. Feel free to argue it out.

3. Assassin’s Creed 2

First time around Assassin’s Creed left somewhat of a sore taste in some gamers mouth’s. While no doubt a technical marvel, the game fell to complaints of repetition due to a lack of variety in it’s mission structure. On it’s second time around things are very different. Nearly every complaint has been dealt with adding a huge wealth of content that is no small task to complete. Flags be gone, in with the feathers. The continuation of the story is not all you’ll find in Assassin’s Creed 2, but a realization of what was started 2 years and change ago. More weapons, more ways to assassinate, and its fair share of “Oh shit” moments lands Assassin’s Creed 2 at #3 on our list.

shadowComplex

4. Shadow Complex

Its not bringing sexy back, but it sure does bring 2D platforming action back in a glorious way. From the folks at Chair Entertainment and Epic Games, Shadow Complex brought the goods to Xbox LIVE Arcade. A title that’s worth every bit of what it cost and then some, Shadow Complex set a new standard for what could and should be expected from Xbox LIVE Arcade. It’s often called “Metroidvania” and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. A game design method that largely goes unused oustside of the Metroid and Castlevania franchise’s, this title took what those 2D iterations already do so well and evolved it into this generation. It’s use of 3D space on a 2D plain, great audio, and a excellent use of experience to keep you going are just some of what makes Shadow Complex stand tall among all games digitally distributed or retail. Shadow Complex finds itself at #4 on our list.
