Question of the Week: Should Xbox Live be worried about OnLive?

This past week the Game Developers Conference saw the public unveiling of Onlive ( A service that will presumably allow for videogame streaming over the internet). Speculation and doubt has been a running theme in the ongoing conversation about OnLive across the web. The supposed “hardcore” are seemingly ready to denounce OnLive on mass while the other segment that is often referred to as the mainstream is ready to claim OnLive as a paradigm shift already.

On the flipside, observing this from an Xbox slant, what are the fine folks up in Redmond thinking at this point? Of course we all know Xbox Live is were its at when it comes to console online services, but with the possibility of OnLive negating the need for an Xbox 360 if all goes the way of OnLive what’s the next step for Xbox Live? With the revamping of the Xbox 360 with the NXE late last year and it’s Netflix video streaming, is there a possibility of Xbox Live achieving an OnLive (assuming it performs as deemed in the real world) like service of its own? Streaming your Xbox 360 games entirely through Xbox Live would change the perception of OnLive no doubt. Given what we know at this point, does Xbox Live have anything to be worried about?

Does Xbox Live have anything to be worried about if OnLive is a success?

    Not. A. Chance.

The day the only way we can get our games is via yet another DRM overlord is the day I hang up my controller.

If you think the Wii is a game console, you mean nothing. This means anybody who thinks OnLive is a threat/important/more than some random bullshit fad, is full of shit. The entire OnLive thing just wants to be the next Wii, something morons buy at Walmart because of some gimmick. It’s not going to do very well, if it does anything at all. Likely it may get a few “mainstream” people who will buy 1-2 software titles a piece. I really don’t see it as anything more than a “LULZ LOOK AT US!”

As consumer connection speeds get faster and bandwidth caps hopefully disappear this maybe more than just "LULZ LOOK AT US!" If not OnLive, someone at some point is going to get this right. The hostility coming from so many is a clear sign of people being afraid of change.

If this service was delivered over Xbox Live much like Netflix is now, who's to say its bad before it's tried? Assuming the folks at Redmond are listening. If MS was smart they'd be thinking about something similar as the next evolution of LIVE, if not next generation, the next for sure if Xbox is still around.

I hate to say it, but I will *rarely* pay for digital content unless I get some sort of hardcopy of it. Point in case – Most XBLA games I have I got w/free points. I do not buy virtual nonsense.

I have no issue with digital downloads becoming the norm, but streaming my games and not having total access to my game doesn't thrill me much.Id rather have a larger hard drive and own my games outright. So will OnLive be successful? Well may be just a gateway to whats to really come, but I think the true gamers will wait and see what the big 3 have in store for us maybe 2 generation from now but no sooner.

DRM = You don't own your games. You rent them.

You have contradicted yourself twice now.

DRM = Digital Downloads = You don't own your games..!

If you don't have a physical copy of a game you are essentially renting.

Ok I should say MOST digital downloads come with a drm. I know Greenhouse does not have a drm attached but boy do I hate the limitations of XBLA. So many issues when my console red ringed.

If I pay for something it comes to my hard drive its mine. it doesn't leave it unless I delete it. Id rather DL a game to my HD then have a streaming version of it from some server that will end up getting bogged down and lagged out over time. If you wanna get overly technical about things then that's fine. But all I said was Id rather DL games t my hard drive to be purchased (sorry I didn't specify that before), then pay some company to stream them to my my home with limited choices. On that note that is what I meant. It will be he way of video game eventually, there's no getting around that !

I dunno man. Even though I have these XBLA games I don't feel like I truly own them. I can't resell them at any time which I think constitutes a huge portion of "owning" a game.

I understand what you are saying though thanks for the clarification.
