Now, for the last few days I have had the great pleasure of playing Defense Grid: The Awakening. Hidden Path sure did go all out on this game. As you probably know, it is a tower defense game. Much like those that some used to play on websites or even in Starcraft (I know I did.). But the real question is, what makes this game so different. Is it the superb quality of the graphics, or is it the fact that you have to actually account for blocking a towers field of view?
Most people think that just because its a tower defense game, that its going to suck and be short. Well, its not. This game can bring you 8-10 hours of great gameplay. Some may ask how, and the answer is The Awakening campaign has 20 different levels, and there are 60 challenges. Each level has a unique set of waves, and tower setups to choose from. Choose wisely though, because certain towers can be blocked by others, which adds even more difficulty to the game.
Throughout the game you will be faced against wave after wave of an alien race attempting to steal orbs from you. Without the orbs, your robotic guide will not be able to function. Your goal is to stop the aliens from getting the orbs and exiting the level. Yeah, at first it seems too easy and you wonder why you paid for this game. Within the first few levels it shows you why. After the first few levels, once the game is done with its little tutorial, the difficulty increases dramatically. This is where you see how much fun the game really is.
Once you start to advance, you are able to upgrade your towers more and more, each level of upgrade costing you more resources. Without the upgrades, you will fail. It is all about placement my friends. Certain aliens are damaged more by certain towers. So make sure you check how big, and what type of wave is coming and make sure you are prepared and make and changes if needed.
When it comes down to it, this is the greatest tower defense game made to date. Thats only my opinion, but I am sure it is shared by others. This is well worth 1200 MSP, but you can snatch it off the marketplace for only 800, right here.
