Beyond Xbox #8: Putting Project Natal into a box

A reasonable amount of time has passed since the unveiling of Project Natal by Microsoft and with that amount of time has come an abundance of gift giving. Gift giving not of the kind you’ll find on a birthday or an arbitrary holiday, but gift giving in the form of a metaphorical box is the what the occasion has ordered. Rather it be the seasoned game “professional” or a regular old gamer sh... more. -
Beyond Xbox #7: Have we forgotten why we play videogames in the first place? Part 1

As the Electronic Entertainment Expo comes and goes, there is one thing that continues to rain supreme. We all feel the need to tare this down and that down, yet we seem to have forgotten why we fell in love with this damned medium in the first place. Jumping to the defense of videogames is easy, but what does that matter when we are taking videogames down from within? Are you apart of the club... more. -
Beyond Xbox # 6: A quick look at women and Xbox

From the get go of videogames, the world of virtual this or that has largely been perceived as a guys only domain. Am I right? Sure I am. Videogames are frowned upon for most women early on, but then I’m sure your saying to yourself where is my basis and/or fact for such a statement? Well, I don’t need any fact or empirical evidence, because the answer to that question can be seen al... more.

Beyond Xbox #5: Do you matter anymore?

I’m not going to beat around the bush here, so I’ll answer that question for you. Nope, you don’t matter. The so-called “hardcore” didn’t matter as soon as the Wii turned into some kind of a freakish phenomenon that no one saw coming, including Nintendo. The truth is, you don’t make any of these companies enough money, when there’s an ocean of potential buyers they can sell to ... more.

Drawing on this post from Garnet Lee on Twitter: GarnettLee Played some R6Vegas2 with the thought of maybe finishing it but put it down when I realized it felt more like work than fun What is the value of fun with a videogame versus the so-called "fun" with every other medium? Beyond Xbox #2: Videogames vs. Film Animation

Why is it that I don't understand how so many people can praise animation in film and pooh pooh videogames so easily. As I sit here and Watch Starz Inside: A Pixar Story (more specifically Part 2), I can't help but see the exuberance oozing out of Richard Roeper as he chronicles Ratatouille. It's no secret that film has had eons to build up the relationship it has with audiences, but why is it so... more.
