Considering the chances this may be the first time you’ve heard of Rogue Warrior, this may be the best thing that could have ever happened to this game. And of course mad props are in order for the folks over at Giant Bomb. We’ve seen/heard “Cole Train” spin his mad lyrics at the end of Gears of War, but this one just may take the end credits cake for sure. Brought to you by sound bytes from Rogue Warrior, Mickey Rourke lays it down heavy. Real heavy! Can you dig?

Arising from the now grave of the Medal of Honor original development team, came the newly retooled studio known as Infinity Ward. On the back of a partnership with Activsion was born the franchise that has seemingly taken the crown from the Xbox exclusive Halo Franchise in many circles. But where did Call of Duty get it’s start for those who didn’t partake in the freshness before it turned into a phenomenon? Thankfully for those, 1200 MSP is all that is standing in your way to relive what started the magic back in 2003 on the PC with the familiar Xbox 360 controls you’ve come accustom to. Are you up to winning THE war again?

From Taylor Swift to OneRepublic to even Guitar Hero cult legend, Steve Ouimette, there is something available for everyone.

Starting off the month will be a three pack of punk metal band, The Fall of Troy, who were responsible for the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock bonus track, “F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X.”. The Fall of Troy recently released their latest album, In The Unlikely Event, which features all of the tracks that will be available in the upcoming pack.

The following week, Neversoft will release a three pack from hit pop group, OneRepublic. They, too, have recently released an album, Waking Up. Two of the songs come off of that album, while one of the songs in the pack comes off of their hit debut album, Dreaming Out Loud.

Following Neversoft’s love for Indie Rock, the next week will feature an Indie Rock three pack. That week fans will be treated to songs from Nada Surf, Spoon and Pavement.

After that week, Neversoft really unloads the big names as they bring fans the “Celebrity New Years Rock Track Pack” as well as a free song from guitarist extraordinaire, Steve Ouimette. The “Celebrity New Years Rock Track Pack” features hit singles from the likes of Taylor Swift, Maroon 5 and No Doubt. Guitar Heroes will also be treated to a free rock/metal version of the Christmas classic, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”, performed by Steve Ouimette, who was responsible for the monster that was “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” in Guitar Hero III. The releasing of a Christmas classic redone by Steve Ouimette is reminiscent to 2007, when Ouimette’s version of “We Three Kings” was released for free download to Guitar Hero III.

All the tracks will be available for play in both Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero.

Rather it be a simulation like Forza Motorsport 3 or all the way to the other extreme with Burnout Paradise. Either way, sliding in somewhere all the way to the extreme and then some comes Disney’s Split/Second. Bringing fast and furious racing action devoid of Vin Diesel, you’ll be bringing down the house literally in some cases. As seen in the latest video of the game, you’ll get a good glimpse of the “Power Play” of which you’ll be using to cause track altering carnage. Split/Second by (Black Rock Studio) the makers of Pure is due out in May 2010.

One of the main and most recently found bug in the game’s multiplayer aspect has been dubbed the “martyrdom pro perk”, for it’s uncanny relation to the game’s original death streak, ‘martyrdom’. When the player initiates a certain sequence with a javelin (or any other) missile launcher, he or she instantly becomes a walking suicide bomber. Killing the player results in the missile firing (or better yet, just falling to the ground), killing enemies around them. This alone has caused a major uproar with many communities; along with plenty of laughter for those witnessing and using the bug in action.

// ]]>

Hopefully, this title update will fix a lot of these known issues, and clean up the multiplayer a bit. I for one am looking forward to it, how about you?

TheXboxDomain will keep you updated on the latest news regarding this update, as soon as we catch wind of it. Keep your eyes peeled, and stay frosty!

UPDATE: Looks like there was finally an “official word” on the matter, regarding the javelin bug in multiplayer. Still no date for when it will hit, but according to fourzerotwo, the patch will be pushed through certification as quickly as possible.

UPDATE #2: Stephen Toulouse (Xbox LIVE’s Stepto, head of LIVE Policy Enforcement) just announced on his twitter feed that the people they catch on Modern Warfare 2 using the above “martyrdom pro” (javelin bug) in game will receive a suspension from the Xbox LIVE service. Remember to play fair or you too can be struck down by the Xbox LIVE banhammer.

Given the NFL has granted an exclusive license to Electronic Arts what else is there to look forward to on the virtual gridiron? Generic teams and rosters haven’t won the hearts of many fans, ever.

In comes Backbreaker, a title aimed and developed to innovate in the realm of gameplay and interface rather than keeping on with the tried and often not so true. Announced today by 505 Games and Natural Motion, Backbreaker will be hitting an Xbox 360 near you in Spring 2010. Utilizing the same tech found in Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV, Backbreaker is to give you a unique experience with every snap of the ball including play control for the novice in an Arcade mode and a Pro mode for the experienced player.

“Backbreaker sets the new standard for football,” said Adam Kline, president of 505 Games U.S. “Repetitive, canned animations are a thing of the past. We recognize that fans are eager for something new, and Backbreaker will blow them away.”

There’s MX/ATV racing with the almighty terrain deformation (greatest buzz word/term ever?). Then there’s Avatar: The Game where you’ll feel cheated in nearly every sense when you realize your TV isn’t 3D capable. Does it matter? Who knows. Furthermore is Rogue Warrior. A title that couldn’t have gotten any less push by it’s publisher Bethesda Softworks.

The real kicker this week though, is World in Conflict. Remember World in Conflict? It’s only two years late to the party. It’s PC counterpart released two years ago back when the RTS was the “hot” thing on consoles. Everybody and their mama was and to a lesser extent still is looking to strike it rich with that Halo effect in my console RTS syndrome.

Well those days of innocence are long-gone as EA Sports has held the exclusivity of the NFLPA for nearly 5 years now. While other franchises have tried to remain alive by tapping into the likenesses of legends like John Elway (All-Pro Football 2K8) and Lawrence Taylor (Blitz: The League series), both attempts have generally been viewed as failures. Even EA Sports has attempted to make arcade-style NFL titles (NFL Street series and NFL Tour), but has always been seen as coming up short.

After all these years, home consoles have been missing a solid NFL Arcade game to compliment the simulation-style play of the Madden series. EA Sports seems to have recognized this hole, and tried to address it through using the name of it’s flagship franchise, Madden.

Features

As far as features go, Madden NFL Arcade is extremely bare-bones, as most “arcade” titles are. As you arrive at the main menu, you have essentially two gameplay options: solo or multiplayer exhibition matches. There is no season or franchise mode, which will really hurt the replayability of the title for fans of the regular Madden series.

Also absent from this title is the ability to manage rosters in any way. One thing that supplements this, however, is the fact that EA has made it so that when you play an online match, your rosters will update to mirror (for the most part) each team’s current squad. This really is a great feature that really helped the game keep up with it’s older brother franchise a little bit more. The main problem with this feature, however, is that in order to download the rosters, you must enter into the pregame lobby, where each player would choose his/her respective team. This becomes problematic (as it has in the regular Madden franchise) because it means quitters galore. If you don’t want to play an online match, but still want updated rosters, you must enter into the pregame lobby, wait about 10 seconds while the roster update downloads (all the while you’re watching your potential opponent choose his/her team) and then you back out, only to send both players back to the matchmaking menu. It can be extremely frustrating to try to find an online match at times.

Other than gameplay features, there’s 200 achievement points to be had, most of which aren’t terribly difficult as long as you play on the original game settings. There’s also leaderboards, which simply do what any other leaderboards do, show you where you rank in the world.

Presentation

NFL Blitz prided itself on having player models that more closely-resembled the Incredible Hulk than human beings. Madden NFL Arcade has essentially taken their player models from the Wii version of Madden NFL 10 and plugged them into a cartoony environment featuring NFL stadiums and various animations from Madden NFL 10.

The graphics are close enough to Madden NFL 10 that players of both games will feel as though they’ve seen it all before, but far enough away from the sim franchise that it doesn’t really come off as copying.

One difference that is unclear whether or not it is a positive change is the fact that there is absolutely no announcer or commentator. The Madden franchise has always had somewhat lackluster announcing (even though they have been improving upon it slowly, but surely over the past few years), but was taking the announcer out altogether the right move? The best move might’ve been to take the abandoned “radio guy” announcer that fans saw in the main franchise for the first few years that appeared on current-gen systems to plug it into this game. While the “radio guy” announcer might not have fit the sim-style that the main franchise goes for, he could have been right at home in this iteration of the game.

Gameplay

As everyone knows, where most great games excel is not in the features or presentation departments, but in the gameplay section. This is particularly true for arcade titles.

Madden NFL Arcade basically plays like a sped up version of Madden NFL 10, but there are differences that set this title apart from the main franchise that must be addressed.

The most obvious difference is that this game is played 5 on 5 instead of 11 on 11. This formula is really successful as it not only speeds up the game, it makes the game feel a lot more accessible to the casual football fan and it really gives the game a “backyard football” kind of feel.

Adding to the arcade-y feel of the game are the “Game Changers”. Much like the “Game Breakers” in the NFL and NBA Street series, Game Changers are essentially power-ups that can be used throughout the game. The Game Changers appear frequently and can be used pretty much without discretion, though it may be wise to save particularly strong Game Changers for big plays in the drive. The Game Changers are pretty varied, with there being 13 different power-ups in total, ranging from adding extra linemen to either hunt down or protect the QB to freezing a player on the opposing team for a play. The only problem that can be cited with the Game Changers is that they have the ability to, as the name alludes to, change the game too dramatically, in what has come to be known as “Mario Kart Syndrome”. Luckily a football blowout can’t be completely reversed as easily with something like a Red Shell, but if you really don’t want the luck-factor of Game Changers getting in the way of a skill-based game, an option exists to turn them off.

The Verdict

Madden NFL Arcade is by no means a “bad game”. In fact, most of the time, the game is quite enjoyable. The only problem that holds this game back from being a must-buy is the features department. The game really could’ve used a shallow version of a season mode. Perhaps that’s a bit much to ask from a 1200 MSP title, but fans have really been spoiled with the feature-rich Madden NFL 10.

Should you buy this title? It all depends on what you’re looking for in a football title. If you want to play some football, but don’t have the money for Madden NFL 10, you now have two options. If you’re looking for the sim aspect or want to spend all your time in franchise mode enjoying the Front Office type of management gameplay, you will probably want to consider picking up Madden NFL 09 used for probably about the same price as this download. However, if you want a fast-paced, simple version of football with decent graphics and a “let’s not take things too seriously” atmosphere, then you will probably want to check out Madden NFL Arcade.
